An investment casting shop working to an aero programme carries requirements that travel further back than its own gate. The casting is bought against a specification, the specification names the alloy, and the alloy is built from a melt that was charged with additions. When the casting is audited, the questions reach the material that went into the heat: which grade was added, from which lot, and against what agreement.

A lot record is what makes the material checkable after it has left the works. It carries the grade and the lot number, the composition of the cast as it was agreed on the order, and the inspection results held against that cast. When the material reaches the foundry it can be put side by side with the purchase order, and when the finished casting is audited the record answers the question of what went into the heat.
The order fixes the composition and the impurity limits first, and the cast is made against that agreement. Melting under vacuum is used for these lots, and the bar is cast from the same heat that was checked, so the material that arrives corresponds to the material that was released.
Before a new cast goes into the furnace, the engineer wants the grade confirmation, the composition of the lot, the section and the cut length, and the mass of the pieces to be charged. Those items come from the lot record and from the order, which is why the diameter and the cut length are settled at the enquiry stage instead of after the material arrives.
A casting programme runs on repeats, so a lot ordered this quarter is compared with the lot ordered last quarter. The grade agreement and the record format stay the same between runs, which keeps the incoming inspection routine unchanged and makes a difference stand out when one appears.
